Sustainable Coastlines – Coromandel

Published on 14 July 2011

What is Sustainable Coasts?

Run by two outstanding men and a team of part time staff and volunteers, Sustainable Coastlines is a successful New Zealand charity that aims to keep our coastlines as beautiful as they should be.

Boosted by a group of young, hard-working and motivated individuals, Sustainable Coastlines have spread the word across New Zealand, getting people to help clean up and make beaches picture perfect.

Sustainable Coastlines is proud to boast that they have inspired more than 12,500 volunteers to help get rid of over 650,000 litres of rubbish from coastlines. That’s over 90,000 kilograms!! Campaigns, fundraising events, tree planting days, clean up days, as well as heaps of fun stuff here and there have helped draw people into becoming more aware of Sustainable Coastlines and how they can help.

Here in the Coromandel region, the most recent event was The Great Coromandel Coastal Clean-up. This huge three day event was held in early April this year. Covering the region, a large number of volunteers helped to remove over 58,000 litres of trash from the Coromandel coastlines!! This fun event not only granted the feeling of accomplishment in helping to clean up New Zealand, but it was a great way for beach lovers to meet other beach lovers, have the opportunity to take amazing photos, and win great prizes!

Even if you missed this event, there are still plenty of ways for you for you to help out.

Four Ways You Can Help:

  • Join their Facebook page, help spread the word!
  • Donate to support the cause. Any amount helps!
  • Be there at the next Sustainable Coastlines event in Coromandel (Or take a trip to Auckland to attend the Fundraising Ball on the 23rd of this month).
  • The next time you see someone at the beach littering, let them know what bins are for!

Cheers
